
Mixed-Methods Research Workshop Held at the Policy Research Institute

The Policy Research Institute hosted a workshop on “Harnessing the Transformative Power of Mixed-Methods Research: From Data to Action in Policy Practice.” The session was led by Dr. Arati Maleku, Associate Professor at the Ohio State University’s College of Social Work and General Secretary of the Executive Council, Nepali Academics in America (NACA).
The workshop had two primary objectives. First, it introduced participants to practical strategies for integrating data at the design, methods, and interpretation stages, grounded in mixed methods’ historical and philosophical foundations. It also highlighted how mixed-methods research can generate actionable insights and drive culturally responsive policy change in Nepal. Second, it provided a platform for research fellows at the Policy Research Institute to share their experiences with research methodologies for policy research.
The workshop explored key aspects of mixed-methods research, including:
- Historical Foundations of Mixed Methods
- Philosophical Foundations of Mixed Methods
- Integration of Quantitative & Qualitative Data
- at the Design Level
- at the Methods Level
- at Interpretation and Reporting Levels
- Application of Mixed Methods in Policy Practice with real-world examples
The event was attended by PRI officials and research fellows, who participated in a dynamic discussion on the policy research methodologies practiced at the Policy Research Institute, public policy dialogue, and multistage information collection, among others, and their potential contributions to the theory of mixed methods.
Executive Chairperson Prof. Dr. Lekhnath Sharma concluded the workshop, expressing gratitude to Dr. Maleku for an engaging and insightful session. He also shared his own experiences teaching and supervising mixed-methods research. He emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration with Nepali Academics in America (NACA) to explore future opportunities for cooperation.
